The pig liver was implanted into the monkey body, and the xenogeneic operation was successful in Xiangya Second Hospital

Sanxiang City daily, August 12 – the reporter learned from the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University that the hospital has successfully carried out the xenogeneic orthotopic liver transplantation for the first time in China. The recipient monkey survived for more than 16 hours without immune intervention, which became the domestic survival record of transgenic pig monkey xenogeneic orthotopic liver transplantation.

xenogeneic orthotopic liver transplantation refers to transplanting all the liver obtained from transgenic pigs into rhesus monkeys with original liver removed to completely replace the original liver. The first orthotopic liver transplantation operation in Xiangya Hospital took 3.5 hours, and the second operation took 4 hours. After the liver blood flow recovered, liver function of 2 cases gradually recovered, and the survival time was 11.4 hours and 16.5 hours respectively.

the project was jointly completed by the Department of liver transplantation, Xiangya Second Hospital, transplantation medicine research center and Animal Medicine School of Yunnan Agricultural University. It is difficult to carry out the preclinical research of xenotransplantation, and the long-term survival of xenotransplantation needs to overcome a series of problems, such as acute and chronic rejection, coagulation disorders, postoperative infection and so on.
